Two Parents
Percentage and Number of Children Living With Two Parents Has Dropped Since 1968 - US census
If you have been living for more than a few decades, you know that things have changed a lot. Things cost a lot more, and society is much less stable than it was before. Families have crumbled, children are shuffled about through one foster home after another, and we are creating babies in a test tube that are rejected for their sex, or given to two men or women to raise as their “children”. Where did we go wrong? How did our society crumble so badly? Rush had the answer in the 90s. He believed the issue began with the glorification of single parenthood.
“Fact: Single-parent families are not the best way to raise children. While there are many wonderful, qualified, and loving individuals who function admirably as single parents, single parenthood is simply not the optimal way to head a family. Those of you who are in single-parent families should understand that this is not an attack on you, the position you find yourself in, or the job you are doing. It is an attack , however, on those who have promoted this lifestyle to the detriment of the two-parent family and the health and well-being of children. It is yet another example of the erosion of traditional distinctions: Single-parent families are at parity with two parent families. It also betrays the true liberal mind-set. It is not enough to live and let live. We must do more than acquire acceptability. We must achieve superiority. It's analogous to the extreme gay-rights lobby. They don’t simply want the same civil rights afforded to other Americans. They already have them! They want special, preferential treatment according to law. ”[1]
As usual, Rush is on target. Children are best served by a stable, two parent home. Every statistic ever done shows that single parent, usually single mom, homes are bad for children. Obviously not all situations are the same. Some people become single parents by the death of a spouse. Others become single parents as a result of rape, or spousal abandonment. These instances are unfortunate and cannot be helped. Many times the remaining parent does the best they can in the difficult situation. Condemnation of single parenthood is not intended to hit people like this who are making the best of a difficult situation. However, it is important to acknowledge what society by and large will not: children need both a mother and a father to develop optimally.
