The 'Deep State'

It is an American pass time to complain about politicians. People on both sides of the aisle who agree about almost nothing else can usually agree that politicians are a blight on the civilized world. While politicians are a massive problem, and often very corrupt, it is not politicians who are doing the most damage to the American system. Politicians are just the figureheads, the ones who take all the blame. The real danger comes from the bureaucrats who have been in government for decades, spending their days writing reams of regulations to support the progressive agenda. Rush understood this clearly and warned that the deep state was accountable to no one.

“Something you have to realize here, folks, and this is the great danger posed by the deep state. They don’t need your support for what they do. They don’t have to campaign for your support. Most of them are never elected. Most of them you never heard of, and you know, don’t know, never will know what they do. And that’s just the way they like it. They don’t think you are qualified to know what they do. They don’t think you are capable of being smart enough to even vote on it. That’d scare the hell out of them if they had to be elected to do what they do as well. So they see all of that, and it just confirms for them that this country can’t be left to the American people to decide who leads it.”

Rush understood that the threat to America was not so much the elected politicians as it was the unelected bureaucrats.  Just as an example of how easy it is for the unelected bureaucrats to impact the lives of Americans, Congress passed just 85 bills in 2021. In 2020, the federal agencies implemented well over three thousand new rules. And no one knows exactly how many of these agencies there are. The United States has become a country not ruled by law, but rather ruled by fiat.
